NOTE : Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission renders final verdict

The Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission (EECC), established pursuant to Article 5 of the Agreement signed in Algiers on December 12, 2000 between the Governments of the State of Eritrea and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and tasked with “decid(ing) through binding arbitration all claims for loss, damage or injury by one Government against the other” arising out of the 1998-2000 conflict, has issued its Final Awards.

ACTU : L’Afrique, zone dénucléarisée !

Treize ans après avoir été officiellement ouvert à la signature, le Traité de Pelindaba instaurant une Zone exempte d'armes nucléaires (ZEAN) en Afrique est entré en vigueur suite au dépôt de son instrument de ratification par le Burundi, le 15 juillet 2009, portant ainsi le nombre d’États Parties à 28.

The tension between "free trade" and protection of domestic cultural industries is not a new phenomenon. In recent years, the issue of trade and culture which had come up with force at the end of the 1980s. Since the topic was moved from the trade (GATT and WTO) arena into the UNESCO. In fact, the WTO has been one of the main stimuli (if not the only one) for a number of States to pursue the adoption of the UNESCO Convention. In this respect, the term aims at corrections in the process of globalization; it serves as antonym to a culturally uniform global society shaped by the USA (1).

ACTU : Ban Ki-moon déplore la condamnation d'Aung San Suu Kyi en Birmanie

Le Secrétaire général de l'ONU, Ban Ki-moon, déplore la condamnation de la chef de l'opposition et Prix Nobel de la paix Aung San Suu Kyi par un tribunal au Myanmar et appelle à sa libération immédiate, a déclaré le 11 août sa porte-parole, Michèle Montas. Le Secrétaire général est profondément déçu par le verdict concernant Daw Aung San Suu Kyi et déplore cette décision, a souligné Mme Montas dans une déclaration.

ACTU : United Nations Security Council Resolution 1882 on Children and Armed Conflict (August 4, 2009)

The United Nations Security Council has adopted resolution 1882 “strongly condemn(ing) all violations of applicable international law involving the recruitment and use of children by parties to armed conflict as well as their re-recruitment, killing and maiming, rape and other sexual violence, abductions, attacks against schools or hospitals and denial of humanitarian access by parties to armed conflict and all other violations of international law committed against children in situations of armed conflict.”

On May 7th and 8th , the Czech presidency of the European Union was able to reunite the key players of Eastern Europe in the hopes of reestablishing ties between the EU and its ex-Soviet Union neighbors (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia and Ukraine) to help reinforce their independence and assure new sources of energy supplies. The EU is trying, on a basis of pragmatic cooperation, to maintain European presence in these countries, which has lead to speculation that it is about to encroach on the sphere of Russian strategical interests. But appearances are deceiving.

L’Etat hébreu fait connaître sa version des faits et du droit quant aux événements qui se sont déroulés à Gaza du 27 décembre 2008 au 18 janvier 2009. Le rapport, intitulé The Operation in Gaza 27 December 2008–18 January 2009 : Factual and Legal Aspects, d’une longueur de 160 pages, examine la légalité du recours à la force contre le Hamas, et la licéité au regard du droit international humanitaire des opérations menées dans la bande de Gaza par l’armée israélienne.

Située à proximité de routes commerciales et pétrolières majeures et au croisement du continent africain, de la péninsule Arabique et de l’océan Indien, la Corne de l’Afrique est un espace de première importance stratégique. Parmi les enjeux géopolitiques y régnant (ressources énergétiques, guerre civile, islamisme…), celui de la piraterie est sans doute le plus médiatique, parce qu’il touche de manière spectaculaire des intérêts occidentaux.
